One of the defining musicals of modern theatre is set to make its premiere in the Philippines. Cuecraft Entertainment, by arrangement with LW Entertainment Ltd., announce Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, based on the Billy Wilder film.
Sunset Boulevard is a gripping tale of ambition, obsession, and faded stardom. The musical has captivated audiences around the world and earned multiple Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards over three decades, including Best Actress honours for Glenn Close and Nicole Scherzinger for their celebrated portrayals of Norma Desmond.
The production features some of musical theatre’s most iconic songs, including With One Look, As If We Never Said Goodbye, and The Perfect Year.
Sunset Boulevard began as Billy Wilder’s acclaimed 1950 motion picture, starring Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond and William Holden as Joe Gillis. The story follows
Norma, a legendary silent-film star longing to return to the spotlight, and Joe, a struggling screenwriter who is drawn into her extraordinary world. The film became one of Hollywood’s enduring classics and won three Academy Awards. More than four decades later, Andrew Lloyd Webber, with book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, transformed the story into a major musical.
Nicole Scherzinger starred in the 2023 staging of the musical.
The musical premiered in London’s West End in 1993 before reaching Broadway in 1994, with Glenn Close as Norma Desmond. Featuring unforgettable songs, the musical has become an enduring part of the international musical theatre repertoire. Three decades later, Sunset Boulevard returned triumphantly to the West End starring Nicole Scherzinger, an international performer of Filipino heritage, as Norma Desmond. The acclaimed production subsequently transferred to Broadway, introducing the musical to another generation of audiences and earning major international recognition. Nicole Scherzinger received both an Olivier Award and a Tony for her portrayal of Norma Desmond.
