There are two exceptional pianists who literally make beautiful music together . We were fortunate to have been in Baguio and attended their concert, truly a flawless performance. They are Mariel Ilusorio and Dr. Abe Galang ll.

It was Saturday, and Baguio was just taking a breather from two punishing typhoons that toppled trees and caused damaging landslides.

That Saturday, it was cloudy, and a fog came down to kiss the earth. It was all about the place, Baguio Country Club, the mist, the cool mountain air . Then very gently and quietly, it filtered through the air—beautiful piano music that soothed the soul . When Mariel and Abe started the performance of four hands by Edward Grieg, Peer Gynt Suite no. 1 Op 46, the hall had become silent . Even the children stopped their banter. All fell silent.

Abe played a delightful blend of music from Giovanni Platti, Andante and Allegro, also a Frederic Chopin, and three, happy, so familiar pieces by Filipino composers arranged by Antonio Espino—Leron Leron Sinta, Tulog Anak, and Atin Cu Pung Singsing.

After this the children were turning restless, and there was flurry in the hall.

Then, Mariel walked in. Tall, regal, very elegant and very beautiful. The hush returned, and all sat back to relish the music.

She started by paying tribute to a person she admired and took pointers from. She fondly called her Mrs A—Carmencita Guanzon Arambulo.

Then, as only she could, she rendered a performance of Claude Debussy, Isle of Joy.

Her Paganini, Lizt gave you an insight into her discipline, her training and adeptness at the keyboard. Crystal-clear notes punctuated the strong yet controlled bravado.

Later in the afternoon, Abe and Mariel did four hands, Mozart’s Symphony no. 40, and Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic dances.

The climax of the performance was a six-hand piece from Rachmaninoff. Max Ilusorio Bildner joined Mariel and Abe in a wonderful finale for the presentation .

Music like this touches your soul. As you listen, you feel upliftment, and your spirit soars heavenward as if to touch Him above the clouds.

This was why this concert was called Body and Soul. Mariel explained, “You play with your body and soul when you perform on the piano.”

Mariel gives concerts and promotes young up-and-coming artists at the Sunshine Place in Jupiter St., Makati. Those interested in relaxing afternoon concerts can email entertainment@bcc.com.ph
