Panoramic window gives view of skyline.
It took some time for Joey to invite us over to his condo home. The wait was as long as the months (or was it a year) that it took him to redesign and reinvent it. When he finally asked us over for dinner, with a few friends, we finally understood why his friend called it a “palace in the sky” (no offense meant to the “palace in the sky” branded in recent Philippine history).

Joey Pulido calls it his ‘floating cave.’
Worth the wait, it is what businessman Joey Pulido calls his “cave”—in fact, a floating cave up several stories overlooking the Makati skyline. When the sun shines, its modern interior is bathed in a happy warmth. When it rains and storms, like this past week, it cocoons you in solitude and reflection. In short, the sky becomes its fickle, moody backdrop, framed in a panoramic glass window.

Joey wanted his 275 sqm condo to be modern, minimalist—and orange, for him, the color of vibrance, energy, and good vibes. He succeeds—it is happy minimalist. A modular white sofa dominates the living room, facing the city skyline. Sit here and Makati is at your feet.
Modern sculptures and Jaime Zobel photographs—his favorites—highlight the setting.

Picture window frames the bedroom.
To us, the masterstroke is the gray ceiling that provides a contrast to the off-white flooring and frames the living area. According to Joey, the ceiling was originally a gray veneer flooring that he decided to use as ceiling with recessed lighting. The effect is graphic minimalism. This is repeated in the dining area.

- Accents blend with the interior.
The gray-and-orange motif is repeated in the bedrooms, the recessed lighting tracing the geometric framework that serves as headboard. In a bedroom with a floor-to-ceiling window that looks out onto the bustling metropolis, it must be a blessing to wake up each morning to a world that throbs with the day’s energy, a limitless universe for the day.

To cap the day, Joey hosted dinner for us and a few friends, marked by endless chatter and laughter. At the end of the day, that’s what good design is for—a space for comfort laughter.
