As the year comes to a close, and the cool breeze and Christmas carols create a mood of quiet connection and contemplation, the spirit of the season is manifested best in the act of giving.
In the art world, an artwork, that is a legacy piece passed down the generations, is a repository of memories—accumulated stories not only of the artist, but also of its keepers that breathe life into its form. An artwork is also an exceptional means of giving back.
With this gratitude and the desire to uphold the philanthropic legacy of the late Justin Nuyda, his family has decided to sell one of his last completed masterpieces, Search Mindscapes: Break of Dawn, in the Under the Tree: The Wish List auction on November 26, 2022, online and on-site According to the late artist’s daughter, the surreal landscape was Nuyda’s “favorite painting.” Proceeds from the sale of this 3 x 5-ft oil on canvas will benefit the Search Mindscape Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to continue the legacy of Nuyda by fostering collaboration and dialogue in the Philippine contemporary art scene; and the Philippine Cancer Society.

Ramon Lerma wrote in Justin Nuyda (1944-2022): Mindscapes of Memories & Meaning in ArtSpeak in the Manila Bulletin, 5 July 2022: “In filling the gaps in the lives of others and facing his own reckoning of mortality, (Justin Nuyda) found that very rare and sublime confluence of art and meaning…I still remember my epiphany as I gazed at the gorgeous surrealist landscapes that he had conjured, the undulating layers of oil sheer painting alchemy… gossamer light, fluid, effervescent, soaring. In my head, Tiny’s art had come full circle, and in that moment of sheer inspiration, he was emerging from the chrysalis of his condition, transfiguring into an uplifting vision…As we bid farewell to (Nuyda), we take comfort in the knowledge that his search for meaning—our search—has not come to an end. It continues to take wing, soaring in our mindscapes today and, I am quite certain, in those of generations to come.”
Similarly, a stellar collaboration of art, design, and celebrity comes together for a worthy cause at the Under the Tree auction through the sale of a highly collectible piece of sporting memorabilia. The Nike Zoom Vapor RF x AJ3 takes inspiration from arguably the greatest tennis player of this generation, Roger Federer, combining his signature performance shoe, the Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour, with the legendary design of Tinker Hatfield’s Air Jordan 3. A holy grail among tennis aficionados and sneaker collectors, this pair of sneakers features Roger Federer’s original handwritten signature on its toe vamp.
The sale of this limited-edition pair will benefit the Negrense Volunteers for Change (NVC), a non-profit organization that provides nutritious meals to poor and displaced children throughout the country, and the Philippine Tennis Academy, a passionate group of tennis enthusiasts that supports underprivileged children with the innate talent for the sports by honing their skills. The owner wishes to raise funds for its sale for the NVC, where he is an active volunteer, as well as to support aspiring tennis athletes in the Philippines.
The Fire Red references the original Air Jordan colorway of simple white, red, and black cement print. It was launched in 2017, the year Federer made a stellar return after recovering from knee surgery and won a total of seven titles in the season, with a winning percentage that was the highest since 2006—a remarkable feat that resonates with the organizations’ advocacies.
Gift-giving comes in so many forms, from a simple hug to generous benefaction. Owning a work of art or a valuable collectible is a gift to oneself, to friends and loved ones. But it can also be a gift for others—presents under the tree that bring fulfillment and glad tidings, spreading joy and hope.
