In the insufferable Philippine heat, gavel&block online auction takes art collectors and viewers to a vicarious tropical paradise experience, of lush greens and blooms, cool waters, and a soothing breeze—all conjured through significant Philippine art. This is on May 11, 2 pm.
In the online limelight is Juvenal Sanso’s untitled ethereal painting of a seaside patch with vibrant flora crawling from scraggly rock forms, azure waters in the horizon, a serene moon over it. The artist’s more recent As Sea Waves Rise is just as soothing, a joyous dance of jagged blues and greens against the scorching yellow of a sun ablaze.
Also a cooling balm to the viewer’s eye and spirit is Rafael Cusi’s untitled watercolor of fishes amid the ocean bed’s flora, with the languid scene above water of boats anchored against varying shades of blues.
Lui Manaig paints the pool alongside other images in Contemporary Cabinet of Curiosity. There’s also Jill Paz’s bucolic scene in an untitled work (Brook #9), a river fringed with blooms.
There’s the explosion of blooms in John Marin’s monochrome Me to You 2, and colors depicted in vibrant abstractions by Nena Saguil in an untitled work from 1979, Isabel Santos’ Perfumed, and Kristoffer Ardena’s Carl Lopez. It is also about traversing parched landscapes and discovering the uncharted, as suggested by the sepia tones of National Artist Jose Joya’s acrylic collage, Cave Offspring, from 1985.
These pieces are showcased alongside collectible furniture: a ’60s-era lounge set designed by Italian legend Tito Agnoli for Pierantonio Bonacina, or a classic ambassador set with goldfish motif.
gavel&block’s room list has other wonderful collectibles, from antiques, decor, religious objects, to fine jewelry and watches. Some highlights from the furniture section include a pair of Qing style Chinese cabinets, a seven-piece Arte Español iron and glass lanai set, and a grand 19th century Gapan comoda. Collectors of ecclesiastical relics can choose from a tightly curated series, among them a mannequin style Sagrada Familia tableau, and two 19th century Santo Cristos depicted in distinctive classical and folk styles.
Exciting fashion section highlights include offerings from two of Europe’s enduring luxury marques: classic quilted bags, in black or silver, and a dazzling multi-charm necklace from Chanel, and a series of cuffs in orange, ivory, or blue from Hermès. For men, there’s the highly collectible Omega Speedmaster Racing.
