‘Somehow, I can’t stop eating’

Melbourne-based artist explores identity, memory, and mental illness

From Celline Marcado's 'Somehow, I can't stop eating'

Celline Mercado’s first solo exhibition with Galleria Duemila, titled Somehow, I can’t stop eating, is extended to August 5, 2022.

Mercado is a Filipino visual artist who explores themes of memory, identity, and mental illness. ⁣Her work spans a variety of media, from graphite and digital drawings to craft-based sculptural pieces.

She holds BFAs in Information Design and Art Management from the Ateneo de Manila University. She relocated to Australia in 2022, where she is pursuing a Master of Fine Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.⁣

Galleria Duemila is at 210 Loring St., Pasay City. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday (10 am–5 pm)

Mercado displays these illustrations in lightbox prints, evoking the illuminated menus one might see at a fastfood counter or drive-thru. In this way, Mercado—vulnerable and exposed—ultimately offers herself to the viewer as food, to be picked apart and consumed, to sustain and nourish.
