Swatch presents its latest innovation, Bioceramic—a first in the watch industry in the world.
Only a few months after the first bio-sourced Swatch launched in September 2020, here comes a new and unique mix of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic—made by Swatch.
Bioceramic is two-thirds ceramic, one-third bio-sourced plastic. It is both resilient and resistant with a silk-like touch—uniting the best of both worlds. This newest material is showcased in the Big Bold line. Its 47 mm diameter case, deep and architecturally structured, provides plenty of room to appreciate the pure and refined Bioceramic characteristics to the full.
In a virtual world press event Tuesday, April 6, Bernardo Tribolet, vice president marketing of Swatch International, and Carlo Giordanetti, Swatch International member of the product and design committee and CEO of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, defined this innovation as “the celebration of pure design and essence of product, of material and quality.”
There are five colors: the classic design statements black and white, the “color of the year” grey, optimistic sky-blue and new power-pink. Big Bold in Bioceramic is a smooth, pure and substantial design piece that allows the full showcase of the new material, thanks to the signature “see-through” Swatch. The bracelet, glass and loops are made from bio-sourced plastic.
Swatch started a revolution in 1983 with the smart introduction of watches responsibly made out of 51 components only. This move to reduce the number of components was a milestone—a “provocation,” in watch technology. Thirty-seven years later, the brand introduced bio-sourced plastic, which debuted on the Bioreloaded collection in September 2020.
Today, Bioceramic comes as the new addition to Swatch Next, the latest release in a run of disruptive ideas.
Swatch always pushes the envelope in design, materials and technology. Bioceramic marks yet another benchmark in the brand’s innovation journey.
By the end of 2021, all key Swatch product lines will further explore the use of bioceramic.
Capping his presentation to world media, Giordanetti echoed the Swatch call for the times—“Time is what you make of it. The memories to keep at your wrist.”
