Ditta Sandico, a proud Filipina designer, believes fashion transcends mere glamor. It’s a philosophy rooted in the essence of creation: the materials, the artisans, and the stories woven within each piece. For Sandico, fashion is a celebration of tradition, a fusion of history and culture, and a commitment to responsible innovation.
Inspired by her father’s passion for indigenous textiles, Sandico spent her childhood immersed in the world of weaving. Observing Mangyan women in Mindoro, she witnessed the magic of transforming raw fibers into intricate fabrics. These early experiences cultivated a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship and a desire to support the communities that sustain these art forms.
Today, Sandico champions the use of organic Filipino fabrics such as pineapple, abaca, and banana. Her designs are proof of this commitment, showcasing elegance and a conscious approach to fashion. By collaborating with indigenous communities and weavers, she empowers artisans and ensures the preservation of traditional weaving techniques. In Catanduanes, she works closely with weavers for her banaca fashion. Ditta’s latest banaca collection has expanded from wraps to pants, long skirts, twirling scarves for accents, and vests with Mangyan panels.
Sandico’s atelier embodies her philosophy of sustainability. A zero-waste policy ensures that every scrap of fabric is repurposed, minimizing environmental impact. Through her work, Sandico encourages women to embrace eco-conscious choices and celebrate the beauty of Filipino heritage.
After 40 years in fashion, Sandico says her journey to redefine fashion, one sustainable and stylish creation at a time, is just beginning.
