Going on a cruise is not for retirees, as many think. It’s a vacation option that appeals to a diverse range of travelers. While cruises have long been associated with older demographics, modern cruise lines have evolved to cater to a broader audience. Families, couples, solo travelers, and younger adventurers are now embracing the cruise experience.

I traveled with 14 other people (from our 22-year-old cousins to 76-year-old aunts and uncles) on an eight-day cruise to the Greek Isles. With an array of onboard activities, entertainment options, and diverse itineraries that span cultural, adventure, and relaxation-focused destinations, cruises offer something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, an adventure-packed vacation, or a family-friendly escape, a cruise can be an enticing choice, regardless of age.

For the Greek Isles, I would definitely recommend doing a cruise. You get to save time and resources (hotel accommodation, airfare) when hopping to different islands.

Taking the Norwegian Cruise Line on an eight-day Greek Isles cruise was truly an unforgettable experience. To make the most of your trip, here are 10 tips to keep in mind:

  1. Plan ahead: Research the cruise itinerary, excursions, and onboard activities in advance. Plotting our itinerary ahead helped us make the most of our time and ensured we didn’t miss out on any must-see destinations.

  2. Pack lightly: Greek Isles cruises often involve multiple stops, so pack efficiently. Include comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, and versatile clothing for both daytime exploring and evening dining.

  3. Excursion reservations: Book your shore excursions early, as popular ones can sell out quickly. Explore historic sites, enjoy local cuisine, or embark on adventure tours to make the most of your port stops. Shore excursions can be expensive, and you have the option to try local tours once you get on land. Just make sure to allot enough time to return to the ship when doing local tours.

  4. Dine freestyle: Norwegian Cruise Line offers “Freestyle Dining,” allowing you to choose when and where you eat. Make dinner reservations in advance if you want to dine in specialty restaurants, which often have limited availability.

  5. Dress code: While Norwegian is known for its relaxed dress code, some specialty restaurants may have a dressier atmosphere. Pack at least one smart-casual outfit for such occasions.

  6. Stay hydrated: The Mediterranean sun can be intense. Always carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while exploring the ports of call.

  7. Currency: Be prepared with local currency for small purchases or meals ashore, but credit cards are widely accepted. Notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid card issues.

  8. Cultural sensitivity: Respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Learn a few basic Greek phrases to enhance your cultural experience.

  9. Seasickness: If you’re prone to seasickness, consider bringing over-the-counter remedies or wristbands designed to alleviate motion sickness.

  10. Travel insurance: It’s always a good idea to have travel insurance, which can provide peace of mind in case of unexpected events, cancellations, or emergencies during your cruise.

To avoid falling into tourist traps while traveling, it’s essential to do your research. Try to venture beyond the popular tourist areas and explore local neighborhoods and hidden gems. Engage with locals to get recommendations for authentic dining and experiences. Be wary of overly aggressive street vendors and avoid making impulsive purchases. Read reviews and seek advice from fellow travelers on trusted websites and forums, and consider using maps and navigation apps to stay on the right path. Ultimately, embracing a more adventurous and inquisitive approach to travel can help you steer clear of tourist traps and discover the true essence of your dream destination.
