Art in the Park, the country’s most anticipated affordable art fair, returns March 17, Sunday, at the Jaime Velasquez Park in Makati City, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Entrance is free.
Art in the Park’s beneficiary continues to be the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, in support of its projects and programs for the National Museum of the Philippines and its nationwide network of museums.
Now on its 18th edition, Art in the Park gathers over 60 exhibitors representing galleries, art collectives, independent art spaces, and student groups—a vibrant showcase of diverse talents—an opportunity for fair-goers to engage, interact, and immerse themselves in Philippine art.
Prices of artworks are capped at P70,000, with many pieces going for even far less.
As in previous years, Art in the Park 2024 features special exhibits by Filipino artists handpicked by the fair’s organizers. This year’s featured artists are abstractionists Pepe Delfin and Clarence Chun, and multimedia graphic artist Demi Padua.
Demi Padua, one of the most sought-after contemporary artists in the Philippines now, has drawn a following for the various elements in his works. One striking aspect is the composition of the portraits themselves. The faces dominate the canvas, serving as visual focal points that merge the abstract and figurative elements. These symbolic visages become both enigmatic and intriguing, connecting to the beholder.
Pepe Delfin explores abstract forms through geometric shapes, squiggles, and lines. She places each element in a visual storytelling of the artist’s experiences, observations, relationships, and the contemporary life. Delfin constructs scenes of solitude and a multitude of emotions through vibrant hues and structured compositions.
Clarence Chun uses abstraction to create narratives centered on his connections and relationships to places, highlighting the influence of bodies of water as a prominent force in his works. He spent his childhood in Leyte and his adult years in Hawaii. Chun’s body of work depicts biographical narratives drawn from his personal history as a first-generation immigrant.
Completing the Art in the Park experience is the beverage and food fare served by food and beverage concessionaires.
The vibe at Art in the Park is also enhanced by music from Any Name’s Okay and Soulful Mood throughout the day.
